Christopher Smith + The Beckon Call

There are so many things hap­pen­ing in Septem­ber. I think its going to be a really busy, pro­duct­ive, and excit­ing month. Com­ing up next Tues­day the 14^th, The Beckon Call is play­ing at the Bilt­more Cab­aret. We have asked some of out favor­ite artists to open the night up. On Sept 24^th we are very happy to be play­ing Vancouver’s beau­ti­ful Malkin Bowl, where we will open up for Tegan and Sara, as well as You Say Party. On the 28^th, I am head­ing out to do a series of solo shows on the east coast. So far I will be play­ing two sets at Pop Montreal, one on the 29^th and one on the 30^th. The plan is to spend a few more days in montreal and then head over to New York to play a couple shows ( yet to be announced ).
Def­in­itely look­ing for­ward to doing a little trav­el­ing, meet­ing new people and play­ing lots of music.

We are going to be play­ing the Bilt­more on Tues­day Septem­ber the 14^th. To open the night we’ve asked four of our favor­ite local artists to pre­form and dis­cuss a couple of their songs. This will include per­form­ances by : Shaunn Watt, Dustin Cole, Chris-​​A-​​Riffic, and Johnny Wake­ham. Fol­low­ing the writers round The Beckon Call will play a full set. We’ve been work­ing on a lot of new mater­ial and look­ing for­ward to a nice, intim­ate even­ing with you all.

Im play­ing a solo set tomor­row night at The Media Club with Conor J. O’Brien from Vil­la­gers, also doing a solo set. Have not played without my band in a long time. Come out and see what hap­pens. Doors are at 8:00 Music will start around 9:00.

We’re really excited to be head­ing over to Toronto to play this show. It’s on Fri­day June the 18^th at 8:00 at a space in the Kens­ing­ton mar­ket called Bread & Cir­cus. Should be good. Hope­fully we’ll see you out.

Finally, two years after its com­ple­tion The Beckon Call has been released. I am relieved, nervous, and excited all at the same time. The amount of help, and sup­port I have received along the way is hard for me to wrap my head around, let alone put into a list. I am so for­tu­nate to live my life sur­roun­ded by such tal­en­ted, and inspir­ing indi­vidu­als. Thank you to every­one who helped me turn these ten little songs into some­thing I can share with the world.

Cultch Cur­ator in Res­id­ence, Cris Derksen brings a diverse and excit­ing series of shows to The Cultch this spring

The Cultch’s Cur­at­ors in Res­id­ence Pro­gram is a new ini­ti­at­ive that offers space in the newly-​​built Van­City Cul­ture Lab to young, emer­ging pro­fes­sional artists in Van­couver for cre­ation, exper­i­ment­a­tion and per­form­ance. Cris Derksen is the Cur­ator in Res­id­ence for April, May and June.

Her first offer­ing, on April 25^th, will use the intim­acy of the Van­City Cul­ture lab to its full effect, pair­ing two of Vancouver’s lushest indie bands, Light­ning Dust and Chris­topher Smith and the Beckon Call, with a string quar­tet. Derksen and local com­poser Lucas Schuller will share the duties of arran­ging Light­ning Dust and Chris­topher Smith and the Beckon Call’s songs for the quar­tet, accen­tu­at­ing the under­stated beauty of the bands’ oeuvre.
